Coke

There it is – the coke has been poured!
The tiny bubbles all race to the top
Compelled to compete, compelled to win!
They have no choice; it is their nature

Some are friends on their way up, and they burst together at the top
Some are envious, always jealous of those above them
Some are buoyant, big bubbles that get to spend a minute enjoying their solitary, dazzling finale

I watch like a god perhaps, artistic
I have an exclusively aesthetic interest in it all

Or perhaps I am a scientist, objective
Observing the laws I have thus set in motion

Or perhaps I am an explorer
I see that the bubbles are actually sea foam washed against the shore
Now they are sinking as the wave rolls back to the sea
And from beneath them emerges the gigantic piece of ice
